Where to Start? Return To Articles Email This Page!
One of the biggest dilemmas in the job search is where to start. What do I do first and how to I keep and stay organized? Let's deal with this issue step by step and provide some clarity.

First, take stock in what your status is in all areas. After all you are in a new and sometimes fighting situation. Take inventory of all of your resources. Your vast array of resources can range from:

  • Spiritual: Your relationship with the Lord. Quality of meditation and study in the Word. Close association with others (i.e., a support group).
  • Support System: Who do you have on your team that you can be accountable to? These people (or person) should have your best interests at heart, but also supply tough love and discipline.
  • Financial: What backup do you have? Do you need to start a job, any job, right away? Or can you take time to decompress from losing a job and find the right direction and job in a quality fashion?
  • Physical: This is one resource that most job seekers do not consider. What type of physical shape are you in? Do you exercise regularly and eat nutritious foods? Most job seekers, due to stress, have the munchies. Starches and sugar head the list. My recommendation is to take daily walks or some type of aerobic activity at least 30 minutes, 5 times a week. It will do wonders for your attitude and health.
Once you have ascertained your resources, list them on paper - preferably a journal or day planner. The mind is very emotional and sometimes logic is waning. Your mind will forget items, paper won't.
Scriptures to Review (Source: The Book)

Look to the scriptures for further taking stock of your resources:

The Lord gave Moses instruction and encouraged organization

Numbers: 2: 1-2
Then the LORD gave these instructions to Moses and Aaron: (2) "Each tribe will be assigned its own area in the camp, and the various groups will camp beneath their family banners. The Tabernacle will be located at the center of these tribal compounds."

Insights:

No matter how devastating our present situation may be, our hope is in God. His resources are infinite. We must believe that he can work in the life of any person-whether that person is a king or a stranger in a foreign land. Trust his protection. All our resources, time and talents come from God. We should strive to use them wisely. (Source: The Book)
